In everyday life, we don’t always use the type of language required by academia. We often use short forms, text-speak and slang. (See also: Professor keeps a hilarious list of slang terms he learns from students) I fully support having university level grade 12 English as a requirement for university entry, so students are prepared.
By taking a university level grade 12 English class, students learn what will be both expected and required in university. We, as students, are given the opportunity to practice and fine tune skills in a less formal setting before undertaking university level classes. In this class, students are given the building blocks and foundations of skills that will benefit us for the rest of our academic (and likely, professional) careers.
The English requirements for college and university are extremely different. The style in which papers are written, level of writing and reading assignments, and grammar expectations vastly differ. Grade 12 university level English covers a broad range of topics that are are specific to the needs of university level students. One blanket “Grade 12 English” course would not adequately prepare students for either level of education.
By having this requirement, they are adequately preparing students for success.

I totally agree with you! It's like training and conditioning yourself for the real fight.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing! I agree that language skills help us to better ourselves and be more prepared for our academics and careers in the future.
ReplyDeleteI really like your ideas, I think that they are creative and original. You conveyed your thoughts very clearly and precisely. How did the article you chose to link to your blog influence your points?
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more about the care free use of slang. In most situations it is unnecessary, especially in professional meetings. Also after some thought I too think grade 12 english is necessary, because it strengthens our learning capability for what is to come in university level programs.
